I’m “Playing” This Piece…

I accompany a kid’s choir. The director has chosen this gorgeous contemporary piece, “Winter Song.” It’s poetry. I love it.

However, I don’t particularly enjoy playing in the key of ludicrous:

just ignore all the black notes and pretend it's in C...
just ignore all the black notes and pretend it’s in C…

When I prepare my high-schoolers for district auditions, they have to identify key signatures. They learn Cb, but when I play “judge” leading up to the big day, I never pick Cb as a key for them to identify in 3 seconds or less. You know why?

Because no one writes in Cb.

This is how I feel after practicing this piece:

she appears to be sleeping...
she appears to be sleeping…
but she is not. Do not disturb the flat monster.
but she is not. Do not disturb Flatty McCrazy Eyes

Want to know how to deplete a year’s supply of Cb?

Play one song in the key of Cb.

:::plays all the flats, swigs a peaty whiskey, sloshes some on piano::: oops. I didn’t need that white note anyway.
